The 460-acre UVM campus is located in Burlington, Vermont and includes 24 on-campus residence halls, three libraries, 10 dining facilities, and a cyber café. Off-campus grounds include research farms, natural areas, and a science lab among others.
History of the University of Vermont. Founded by Ira Allen in 1791, the University of Vermont is the fifth oldest university in New England, after Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown. Although initially a private university, UVM attained public status in 1862 with the passage of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act and the addition of the State Agricultural College.
When fire destroyed the university’s original building in 1824, the citizens of Burlington donated money to fund its replacement, the Old Mill. The Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who was also a commander in the American Revolution, laid the cornerstone for Old Mill, which still stands on University Row along with a statue of Lafayette on the north end of the main green.
Throughout its history, the University of Vermont has maintained a commitment to fairness and equality. It was the first American university to declare public support for freedom of religion, and was also an early advocate of the rights of both women and African-Americans. In 1871, UVM shunned tradition by admitting two women as students and, four years later, initiated women into Phi Beta Kappa, the country's oldest collegiate academic honor society. In 1877, the first African-American was also initiated into the society. [Top]

University of Vermont Athletics. More than half of the students at the University of Vermont are involved in on-campus athletics, with opportunities that range from high-level, Division I competition teams to smaller, intramural team sports. UVM offers nine men's and 11 women's NCAA Division I athletic teams, with top teams in skiing, basketball, and hockey among others. Men’s Division I teams include baseball, basketball, cross-country, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, soccer, and track and field.
